【Saiyuki（最遊記）】Vol.1 CHAPTER3より "we'll be off then."

デュアルスコープの索引でoff を引くと、前置詞の用法しか載ってない。意味は「分離・除去」。

私がoff という語から思いつくのもこの用法だなあ。
乗り物から降りるというときの "get off" とか、
スイッチを切るときの "turn off" 、
あるいは非番という意味の "off duty" とか。

ヒカ碁のGAME16でも伊藤くんが「今から塾」だとして "I'm off to my cram school now." と言っていて、
「行く」という意味で "go" じゃなくて "off" が使われているのが不思議な感じだったけど、
辞書を引くと、副詞off には「出発」の意味があると分かって納得。

私の中ではoff って "get off" のイメージが強くて、「上から下に向かって離れる」イメージで捉えていたけど、
そもそもoff の基本義は「接触している状態からの分離」であって、分離の方向は関係ないらしい。
今回のセリフの場合は、今いる場所から離れる＝行く、というイメージで捉えたらいいのかな。

英英辞典ではoff の一番目の意味に "down or away from a place" というのがあって、

He fell off the ladder.
We got off the bus.
I shouted to him, but he just walked off.
When are you off to Brazil?

という4つの例文が載っていたから、「分離・離脱・逸脱」も「出発」も基本は同じということか。

そういえば昨日、ラジオで『英会話タイムトライアル』を聴いていたら、
「どちらへお出かけですか？」という表現で "Where are you off to?" が出てきた！
漫画だけじゃなくてリアルでも使う表現なのね。

Where are you going? でも通じるけど、直接的すぎるんだって。
（辞書の where の欄にも「単なるあいさつとしては詮索がましくしばしば失礼になる」と書かれてあった。し、知らなかった。）
会話の中で気軽に使うなら "off to" がいいらしい。

って、あれ？

疑問副詞where には前置詞to の意味が含まれているはずなのに、"Where are you off?" じゃないんだ？
"Where are you going to?" とは言わないよね。
辞書を見ていると "Where are you off to?" の例文と一緒に「to の省略不可」という注意書きがあるのを発見。
でも、それがなぜかは書いてなかった。そういうものとして覚えるしかないのか？
